BURULI ULCER IS LIFE THREATENING, SAVE A LIFE TODAY

Have you had about Buruli Ulcer (BU)?

Buruli ulcer is a chronic debilitating disease caused by Mycobacterium ulcerans.
It often affects the skin and sometimes bone, and can lead to
permanent disfigurement and long-term disability.

At least 33 countries with tropical, subtropical and temperate climates

have reported Buruli ulcer in Africa, South America, and

Western Pacific regions.

In Australia, an increasing number of cases have been reported since 2013.

  • Partial data from 13 countries for 2017 shows 2206 cases compared to 1920 in 2016;
  • Australia and Nigeria reporting most cases.

Causative Organism

It is caused by bacteria called Mycobacterium ulcerans.

The organism produces a unique toxin – mycolactone – which causes tissue damage

and inhibits the immune response.

HOW IS TRANSMITTED?

The mode of transmission is not known and there is no prevention for the disease.

Signs and symptoms

It starts with swelling on the skin.

It affects any part of the body mostly the skin of the leg, arm, head.

It is usually painless.

It causes loss of sensation around the affected area

(Usually, the person will not pain or touch at the affected part).

The affected part swells leading to an ulceration (wound) after weeks.

The skin degenerates after weeks leading to the ulcer.

Occasionally, bone is affected causing gross deformity.

DIAGNOSIS

Clinically swelling/ wound from Buruli ulcer is usually painless,

with loss of sensation compare to other inflammatory conditions e.g

cellulitis where there will be redness with associated pain, fever etc.

However, Buruli Ulcer is usually diagnosed in the laboratory

through various investigation.(IS2404 polymerase chain reaction

(PCR),

Direct microscopy,Histopathology and Culture).

TREATMENT

The combination of antibiotics remain the only options

(RIFAMPICIN+ STREPTOMYCIN),

RIFAMPICIN + CLARITHROMYCIN.

Wound dressing, wound debridement and skin graft are used to speed up

the healing process.

PREVENTION

There is no option to prevent BU since the mode of

contacting the infection is unknown.

CONTROL.

When the infection is Identify, the goal is to minimize disability/ deformity,

in cases that have been established, long time goal is to help

the patient recovers from the damage.

KNOW YOUR HEART AGE, A KEY TO PREVENTION OF STROKE

Do you know your heart age?

Your heart can be older than your real age,

Heart attack and stroke can be prevented if people at risk can be identified.

The world is moving we must be not be left behind, our health is our responsibility hence working

towards achieving a life free of illness.

Public Health England is urging people over 30 to take an online test to find out their heart age,

which indicates if they are at increased risk of suffering a heart attack or a stroke.

They predict about 80% of heart attacks and strokes in people under 75 could be prevented if the

heart health was improved.

Unhealthy lifestyles put four in five adults at risk of early death, they estimate.

People should quit smoking, eat a healthy diet and get enough exercise.

The test is not diagnostic - it will not tell you whether you are going to have a heart attack - but it can

be a wake-up call to make healthy changes.

How to improve your heart health:

  • Give up smoking
  • Get active
  • Manage your weight
  • Eat more fiber
  • Cut down on saturated fat
  • Get your five a day fruit and vegetables
  • Cut down on salt
  • Eat fish
  • Drink less alcohol
  • Read labels on food and drink packaging

Source: NHS Choices

Almost two million people have taken the heart age test and 78% of participants have a heart age

higher than their actual age, putting them at greater risk of an early death. Of those, 34% were more

than five years over their actual age and 14% at least 10 years higher.

NHS

The test asks 16 simple physical and lifestyle questions and gives an estimation of your heart age, and

a prediction of the risk of having a heart attack or stroke by a certain age.

It also gives suggestions on lifestyle changes to help people reduce their heart age.

One year after quitting smoking, a person's risk of heart disease is about half that of a smoker's

Doing the recommended amount of weekly exercise - at least 150 minutes of moderate aerobic

exercise, such as cycling or brisk walking - can reduce the risk of heart disease and stroke

Increasing the amount of fruit and veg from three portions daily to more than five can lower the risk

of heart disease or stroke

You can do the test here.

ENERGY DRINKS BAD FOR CHILDREN..STOP IT

Government proposes energy drinks ban for children The sale of energy drinks could be banned in England to anybody under 18, amid fears they are damaging children's health, the prime minister has said. The government has launched a public consultation on its plans to make it illegal to sell the drinks to children. Energy drinks contain high levels of sugar and caffeine and have been linked to obesity and other health issues. Reality Check: Is caffeine bad for your health? The two main ingredients of concern in energy drinks are sugar and caffeine. We know having a diet too high in sugar risks weight-gain, which is, in turn, is linked to heart disease, some cancers and type 2 diabetes. But how much do we know about what caffeine does to young people's bodies in the short and longer-term? In the short-term, it can cause headaches on withdrawal, irritability, raised blood pressure and heart-rate. But there isn't much good evidence that caffeine directly harms health, including that of children, in the longer term. Although it raises blood pressure in the short-term, there is no association with hypertension (chronic high blood pressure). However, the shorter-term symptoms of caffeine causes may indirectly lead to other health issues. For example, there's plenty of evidence linking disturbed sleep to a range of negative health consequences, including weight gain. One study linked energy drinks to "poor quality or reduced sleep, headaches, risk-seeking behaviour and depressive symptoms". The maximum recommended intake of caffeine for children is lower than for adults - no more than a daily serving of 2.5mg for every kg a child weighs - meaning it's easy for a young person to over-consume caffeine if they drink energy drinks. HIS DEATH MY REGRET, MOTIVATOR TO SAVE LIFE

It was a bad day when I heard he passed away, the journey was over. The silent killer called Hypertension cut it short but it was too late to stop him from dying. It could be you, Your brother Your sister Your cousin Your course mate Your colleague I mean your guy It could be anybody. A cool day at around 1 am I was lying down on the couch in my office when I heard a bang on the door of the clinic, with a shout Dr!!!!!. At the door was an elderly woman with his son groaning in pain, the young guy got the quickest medical attention with a `relief. He was later diagnosed of Appendicitis ( an inflammation of the organ appendix ) with high blood pressure. High blood pressure the mother exclaimed! how come she questioned ? we did our best to restore his health and relief his discomfort. He was better but his condition warrant an expert review hence we referred him . At the general hospital, the Doctor saw him at the outpatient, series of investigation done and he was allowed home the same day. Another referral was imminent, now to a tertiary health institution for expert management. Note he was not admitted any of other institution since I saw him. ` Two months later I received a distress call from the mother with the history of sudden collapse. We received him conscious with severe chest pain lo and behold the blood pressure was on very high. We did all in our capacity to improve his condition and referred him. Breaking news……….. Gone so soon, his departure announced a few days later. MY REGRET````````````1 We proposed to stage a free medical check up in that area some months ago but it does not materialized. How I wish we spot him earlier may be he would have survive it. ADIEU… MY PATIENT His scenario was a motivator towards the present campaign and by God grace, we will not relent. @TID-CARE
