SEMINAR ON PEPTIC ULCER BY BADMUS AROWOLO (RN) ON TID-CARE WHATS UP PAGE

Good evening the distinguished members
As this group was known for educating ourselves on health and related matters...
...which have been put on hold for sometimes,
We apologize for that and as promised earlier, we are back.
I welcome all of us once again
this evening we will be discussing a very popular disease condition
this condition is known as...
Peptic Ulcer Disease(PUD)
Peptic ulcer is a disease that occurs when there is a presence of a sore( wound) on the inner lining of our digestive tract (the tube where food passes from our mouth to the anus).
The disease is classified based on the location of the sore in our digestive tract
The classifications are:
1. Oesophagal ulcer( when the sore is present on the inner lining of the oesophagus, a long tube that connects our mouth to the stomach).
2. Gastric ulcer(when the sore is located in the stomach)
And the last one...
3. Duodenal ulcer(when the sore is at the uppermost part of our intestine)
Now to the causes of PUD...
The major causes of PUD have been traced to two different things; however, there are other situations that can cause it.
The two major causes are Infection and Medication
how does infection cause PUD?
There are bacteria known as Helicobacter Pylori
This bacteria lives in the stomach without causing any harm but may cause PUD if its environment is disrupted.
Now to the cause by medications...
Some over the counter drugs we use may predispose us to develop PUD
Especially a group of pain relievers we knew as NSAIDS
Non-Steroidal Anti-inflammatory Drugs
Examples of these drugs are aspirin, ibuprofen, naproxen, diclofenac and so on
However, the therapeutic effects of these drugs cannot be overemphasized but it's advisable we consult a physician before using any drug.
Now to the risk factors for PUD
The major risk factors are smoking and drinking
If you smoke and drink, you are more exposed to PUD than people who do not.
The signs and symptoms of PUD
The major symptom of PUD is abdominal pain, which may occur in any region between your navel and your breast bone.
Sometimes the pain may be more at night and may be relieved with food consumption
Other rare symptoms are: Vomiting, loss of appetite, weight loss, vomiting of blood
If you are experiencing all these signs and symptoms, please consult your physician.
Now what are the complication that may occur when PUD is left untreated
They include; Infection (peritonitis), scar formation, perforation, and intestinal obstruction
Thanks very much for your attention, if you have any questions regarding the topic and other related matters, do not hesitate to drop your questions
And every question will be answered.
Once again, thanks for your time.
